Key sector
There are approximately 75,000 people working in Bath & North East Somerset.
Key employment sectors include Public Administration, Education and Health (38,500 jobs), Banking, Finance and Insurance (14,000 jobs) and Retailing, Restaurants and Tourism (21,300 jobs). Together these sectors account for 80% of local jobs and the Service Sector overall for 85% of local employment, above the national average.
In contrast the area has below average employment in manufacturing, although there are marked differences between different parts of the district. In Midsomer Norton and Radstock, a centre for printing and packaging, manufacturing employment is 2.5 times the national average whilst in Bath recent increases in sectors such as publishing show that the City in particular is becoming a niche area for growth sectors.

Over the next 10 years manufacturing employment will continue to decline whilst service sector jobs will increase by 18%, with retail, tourism and leisure set to grow by 12%. Other growth sectors, both regionally & locally are likely to include ICT, Creative Industries and Environmental Technologies.
Bath and North East Somerset Council have begun to look at under-utilised sectors with big potential for growth, and initial sector profiles are available on this site. The four sectors are:
- Creative Industries
- Low Carbon Economy
- Research and Development – high technology
- Wellbeing Tourism
